The family of a missing Kamloops woman is hoping a Portland, Ore., psychic will be able to do what the police have been unable to do so far

-- find Sherri McLaughlin.

The 20-year-old went missing Sept. 19 while riding her mountain bike to her ex-boyfriend's home around 3 a.m.

Psychic Laurie McQuary says she helped another Kamloops family five years ago, and feels certain she can benefit the McLaughlins as well.

"I feel I can do some good," said McQuary, who says she is not charging the family a fee or asking them to pay the cost of her trip.

She will arrive in Kamloops on Friday.

Although she says she has already had some premonitions about what happened to Sherri, she doesn't want to make them public until she has had a chance to speak with the family.

She said she wants to make the trip to Kamloops to see if more images about Sherri come to her.

"It's timely that I come up. . .Sometimes being on the spot helps. I can pick up additional information. I pick up feelings, names. It's a hard process to describe. It's intuitive."

McQuary, who operates a psychic consultation business in Portland, said she plans to visit the location where McLaughlin's bike was found, as well as the young woman's apartment.

She said she has also packed her hiking boots in order to check some locations off the beaten trail.

This is the second time McQuary has been involved in the search for a missing Kamloops person.

In January 1989, she helped the family of Mark Klotz, 22, who went missing from a Dec. 17, 1988, drinking party near the North Thompson River.

McQuary said she was able to pinpoint the exact spot in the river where his body was subsequently found.

The Klotz family recommended she help find Sherri McLaughlin, said Sherri's brother, James McLaughlin.

"Art Klotz (Mark's father) feels the psychic was very close in her predictions. She's going to come up and help us look. It can't hurt," he said.

He said the family has sent McQuary maps of Kamloops and the surrounding area, and has pinpointed where Sherri's bike was found.

"She had feelings about a few different areas in town," he said.

James said his father, a corporal with the Surrey RCMP, is skeptical.

"He feels it's more hype than anything else. The only reason we pursued it, is she's not asking for any money. As soon as they start doing that, you have to disregard it because they could be soaking you for the money," he said.

"My mother is coming to Kamloops (from her home in Victoria) to speak with the psychic. I'm afraid, in my mother's case, it might be getting her hopes up too high."

But McLaughlin said personally he wants to pursue this avenue because there is really nothing else the family can do at this point.
