Kamloops RCMP fear a kidnapper is behind the disappearance of a Mountie's daughter.

Sherri McLaughlin, 20, went missing just after 3 a.m. on Sunday while riding her bicycle to the home of her former boyfriend, Shane Gowans.

When she didn't arrive, Gowans, 19, said he started walking the route she would have taken. He found her mangled bike and overnight bag at the side of the road.

"We're trying not to alarm everybody," Sgt. Shawn Wylie said yesterday. "But using the word `abduction' is not out of line."

McLaughlin is the daughter of Cpl. Gary McLaughlin of Surrey RCMP, Wylie said. Sherri and her older brother John were raised by their mother in Kamloops.

Wylie said police believe McLaughlin's bike was run over as it lay on the road and that she was not run down.

Police found no physical evidence at the scene, such as blood or pieces of clothing, and police dogs could not pick up McLaughlin's track away from the area, leading police to believe she was taken against her will.

The sudden disappearance of the out-going young woman has stunned her friends.

"It's been very tough. It would be better to know one way or the other, then I could deal with it," said Gowans, who admitted he is a suspect in the case.

"The police have told me to stick around home and say nothing to anybody," he said yesterday. He said he broke up with McLaughlin earlier this year but they remained good friends.

The unemployed parks worker said McLaughlin called him early Sunday, saying she wanted to come over to talk.

Her best friend, Arlene Heimbechner, fears the worst.

"The only possible thing I can think of is somebody drove by and grabbed her," said the 20-year-old child-care worker. "She's just gone. We don't know what happened."

Heimbechner said she introduced Gowans to McLaughlin and doesn't believe he is behind her pal's disappearance. "Shane would never do anything to hurt her."

Heimbechner said McLaughlin, whom she has known for 10 years, worked as a waitress at Pizza Hut and liked to dance at nightclubs, shop for clothes and hit the gym.

She wouldn't just take off, Heimbechner said. "If Sherri's not going to be somewhere she calls . . . . I know if she could get to a phone she'd call me. She calls me every day."

McLaughlin is 5 feet, six inches, with brown hair that falls to below her shoulders. She was last seen wearing a purple, navy and white windbreaker and dark jeans.
