The daughter of a Surrey RCMP corporal has disappeared in Kamloops and police think she may have been abducted.

Sherri McLaughlin, 20, daughter of Cpl. Gary McLaughlin, went missing after saying she planned to ride her mountain bike to visit a friend's place about three kilometres from her North Kamloops residence at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

She never showed up, but her damaged bicycle and her knapsack were found by the side of a two-lane street about half-way between her friend's place and hers.

A police news release stressed that the bicycle was struck by a vehicle while it lay beside the road, suggesting police do not believe McLaughlin was the victim of a hit-and-run driver.

"We're certainly looking at it as a possible abduction,'' RCMP S. Sgt. Peter Montague said.

An extensive search of the area using police dogs failed to locate the young woman.

McLaughlin's residence on Schubert Drive faces the North Thompson River, but because she was riding her bike in a westward direction away from the river, police have not searched the river, Kamloops Cpl. Wayne Zaksauskas said.

"We have no reason to believe she's in the river,'' Zaksauskas said.

Montague said police haven't received a ransom notice, nor do they believe there is any connection between McLaughlin's disapperance and her father's position with the RCMP.

McLaughlin's father and Shane Gowans, the friend who was expecting her when she disappeared, could not be reached Monday.

However, McLaughlin's former room-mate and friend, Tyson Vendean of Kamloops, said she is a responsible person who wouldn't just disappear without telling anyone her whereabouts.

"If she was going somewhere she would always let someone know it,'' Vendean said.

McLauglin is a waitress at a Pizza Hut restaurant in Kamloops. Her employer, Morley Dickson, said she is a reliable, honest employee with a good attendance record and a happy disposition.

"She was happy, real bubbly all the time,'' he said.

He said staff members are concerned about her disappearance.

"We're all hoping for the best,'' he said.

McLaughlin is 165 cm (five feet, six inches tall), weighs 50 kg (110 pounds) and has brown, belowshoulder-length hair.

She may have been wearing dark jeans and a multi-colored windbreaker that was purple, navy and white.

Anyone with any information should call Kamloops RCMP at 1- 828-3000.
