A 28-hour gap in the life of Jennifer Cusworth is vital in finding answers to her brutal beating death, police said yesterday.

And police say they don't know yet whether some striking parallels in Cusworth's weekend death in Kelowna and the disappearance of Sherri McLaughlin Sept. 19 in Kamloops are mere coincidence or worth probing further.

Cusworth, 19, was last seen alive walking by herself at 5:30 a.m.

Saturday in downtown Kelowna after a night of partying. She died from a blow to the back of the head and her body was ditched near a suburban driveway.

Her body was discovered at 9 a.m. Sunday. Kelowna RCMP Staff- Sgt. Darrel Graves said there is no evidence of sexual assault, nor an apparent motive.

In the Kamloops case, McLaughlin, 20, was last seen alive on a weekend morning at about 4 a.m. She was biking her way to the home of a friend when she vanished.

Authorities found her mangled bike, but a massive search has failed to turn up any leads.

Like Cusworth, the 20-year-old waitress also liked to dance at nightspots. She vanished in the early morning hours, and someone who had a vehicle was involved.

Graves cautioned yesterday it is premature to come to any conclusion about a link until the time frame of Cusworth's disappearance is narrowed down.

Police have pinned down some of the movements of Cusworth on

Friday night and early Saturday. She was at a large party at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, left later for nightclubs downtown and returned to the house party early Saturday.

Graves said she was seen walking alone near Bernard Avenue and Ethel Street in the general direction of her uncle's home, where she lived.

Meanwhile, Barb Penner, a classmate at Okanagan University College, said she last saw Cusworth Friday afternoon when several women in the human-services diploma class discussed going out for dinner.

"The world is a poorer place because Jennifer is not here," she said.

Killing, disappearance may be tied

police - Canadian Press Kamloops - Kamloops detectives are looking into the possibility of a link between Sunday's slaying of a Kelowna college student and the disappearance last month of a Kamloops woman.

Sherri McLaughlin, 20, went missing Sept. 19.

The body of Jennifer Cusworth, 19, was found Sunday in a Kelowna ditch.

Sgt. Shawn Wylie of the Kamloops general-investigation section said his detectives are keeping in touch with their Kelowna counterparts to see if there is any connection between the two cases. "There's no common ground so far," said Wylie, noting that the Kelowna RCMP members have "just gotten into their investigation." Meanwhile Wylie has asked the Kamloops Crime Stoppers to raise the maximum reward in the McLaughlin case to $5,000 from $2,000.
